Terms of use

Last updated: October 30, 2026.

These terms govern your use of RepoMasters, the open source repo trading card game. By creating an account or playing, you accept them. If you don’t agree, don’t use the service.

The service

RepoMasters is free. Nothing in it can be bought with real money.

The game is in its launch phase: it’s provided as is, with no guarantee of continuous availability or freedom from errors. Its rules, balance and features may change, and it may be interrupted for maintenance.

Your account

  • You must be at least 15 to create an account: that’s the age from which French law lets you consent on your own to the processing of your personal data.
  • One account per person. Your account is personal: it can’t be lent, shared or sold.
  • You access RepoMasters with your MastersMasters account, the shared account for the Masters games: signing up, logging in and your email address are managed there, under its own terms.
  • Keep your MastersMasters login details secret. You’re responsible for what happens on your account; let us know right away if someone else uses it.

Bytes and cards

  • Bytes, the in-game currency, and repo cards have no monetary value. They can’t be bought or exchanged for real money.
  • Selling, buying or trading bytes, cards or accounts outside the game, for money or anything else, is forbidden.
  • They don’t belong to you: you get a personal right to use them, in the game and for as long as your account exists. We may correct, remove or restore them in case of a bug, an error or abuse.
  • A card’s rarity (its tier, from Prototype to LTS) follows the repo’s star count on GitHub, rechecked every night, and can change with it.
  • Floppy contents are drawn at random; the odds are published and open to everyone.

BBS and trades

  • The BBS, the player auction market, and trades between friends unlock at level 5, with a verified email address.
  • A won auction is final. No fees are taken: the seller gets the full final price. A trade between friends covers cards only, with no bytes.
  • Payment for an abnormal sale (a price far from usual sales) may be held while it’s checked.
  • You may not manipulate prices, bid up your own auctions, move cards or bytes between accounts you control, or exploit a BBS bug. Possible sanctions: canceled transactions, removal of items obtained, a BBS ban, or suspension or deletion of the accounts involved.

House players

About twenty house players, automated accounts run by the team, keep RepoMasters lively. They insert floppies, put repos up for auction, bid (sometimes against you) and share their best pulls in the feed. They also send you a friend request when you’re looking for one of their duplicates, propose trades to you and respond to yours. They follow the same rules and limits as you, and never bid on another house player’s sale. Their bytes are given to them by the team; like all bytes, they can never be exchanged for money.

In Battle, when no other player is waiting, one of them takes you on after a few seconds. Their answers are prepared in advance to match their style, but the game is presented to you as a live game: it’s the only exception to the rule that a recorded challenge is always announced as such. It counts toward your league and rewards like any other; their own rating never moves.

You’ll know them by their usernames, each a nod to developer culture: dangling_ptr, rubber_duck, tabs_vs_spaces…

Rules of conduct

The following are forbidden:

  • cheating and deliberately exploiting a bug (report it instead);
  • bots, scripts and any automation of the game, and any attempt to get around technical limits or disrupt the service;
  • a username that’s offensive, hateful, misleading or impersonates someone else.

We may change a username, restrict some features, or suspend or delete an account that breaks these terms, in proportion to how serious the breach is. You can challenge a decision by writing to the contact address.

Repository data

Repository information (name, owner, description, stars, forks, language, license, topics, creation year) comes from the public metadata GitHub makes available through its API; the source is credited wherever this data appears. Language colors come from GitHub Linguist (MIT license). Card illustrations are drawn by RepoMasters from each card’s identifier: no logos, no avatars, no images taken from the projects.

RepoMasters never copies a repository’s code, documentation or files. Projects remain the property of their authors, under their own license; a card gives you no rights over the repo it represents.

Every card links to the repo’s page on GitHub: that’s where its code, documentation and license live.

RepoMasters isn’t affiliated with, endorsed, sponsored or certified by GitHub. GitHub is a trademark of GitHub, Inc.; project, owner and organization names, and the trademarks mentioned, belong to their owners.

Credits

Liability

Because the service is free and in its launch phase, our liability is limited to the extent permitted by law, including for interruptions, lost progress or rule changes. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the law gives you as a consumer.

Changes to these terms

These terms may change as the game evolves. If there’s a significant change, you’ll be told in the game or by email before it takes effect. If you keep playing afterwards, you accept it; otherwise, you can have your account deleted.

Deleting your account

You can ask for your account to be deleted at any time by writing to contact@masters-masters.com. This erases your progress, your bytes and your drive (all your repo cards), with no compensation; market and trade history is anonymized.

Governing law and contact

These terms are governed by French law. If there’s a dispute, write to us first so we can look for an amicable solution; failing that, the French courts have jurisdiction, subject to the rules that protect consumers.

Contact: contact@masters-masters.com.

How we process your personal data is described in the privacy policy.
