What is RepoMasters?
RepoMasters is an open source trading card game you play in your browser. Every card is a real public repo, its rarity follows its stars, and you get a free floppy of 5 repos every 10 minutes.
Is RepoMasters free?
Yes. The game is completely free, with no ads and no purchases: a free floppy arrives every 10 minutes, and cron jobs earn XP.
Can you make money with bytes?
No. Bytes are the in-game currency: you use them to bid in auctions, and they can never be converted into money. No floppy or card is ever sold for real money.
How do you earn bytes?
By playing: 1 B for each card you recycle; 20 B, plus 1 B per repo, when you compile an owner’s collection, and 10 B, plus 1 B per repo, for a small collection; 50 B once when you reach level 5, which unlocks the market; and by earning the Early adopter badge on a repo on the rise. At auction, bytes move from one player to another. Cron jobs, streaks and achievements earn XP.
What are the odds?
Each repo in a floppy is pulled independently: Prototype , Alpha , Beta , RC , Stable , LTS . There’s no guarantee and no pity timer: on average, an LTS shows up in 1 floppy out of 200. These are the base odds: from a 3-day streak, and during happy hour, the odds of Beta or higher repos go up (details on the Floppy odds page).
Where do the repos come from?
From the public metadata GitHub makes available through its API: name, owner, description, stars, language, license. The catalog gathers public repos with at least 100 stars, forks excluded, rechecked every night. No code is copied, and card illustrations are drawn by RepoMasters, with no logos or avatars.
Do I need a GitHub account?
No. RepoMasters only reads public repository data and never asks for access to your GitHub account. It’s an independent game, not published, endorsed or sponsored by GitHub.
Can I reuse the repos’ code?
The code isn’t in the game: a card only shows the repo’s public metadata and links to its page on GitHub. The code can be reused there under the license its authors chose, which the card shows when it’s known.
How is a card’s rarity decided?
By the repo’s stars, split into six tiers, from Prototype (100 stars) to LTS (20,000 stars and up). The more stars a repo has, the rarer it is to pull.
Can a card’s tier change?
Yes, rarity is alive: stars are rechecked every night, and when a repo crosses a threshold, its tier follows for every copy. If one of your cards climbs at least 2 tiers after you get it, you earn the Early adopter badge on that repo.
Can I sell or trade my cards?
Yes. Recycling takes back any copy at a fixed price. From level 5, you can also put your cards up for auction on the BBS, with no fees: the seller gets the full final price. With a friend, you can trade cards for cards, or simply give one away.
How old do I need to be?
You must be at least 15 to create an account, the age from which French law lets you consent on your own to the processing of your data.
What data do you collect?
Only what the game needs: what your MastersMasters account shares (email address, username, display name) and your progress. No ad trackers, no analytics, and your data is never sold.
Does RepoMasters work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in the browser, with nothing to download. To use it like an app: on iPhone, in Safari, tap Share then “Add to Home Screen”; on Android, open the browser menu then “Install app”.
The whole game is explained in How to play.
